What’s on this week?

It’s only the 4th January and the building is already a hive of activity!

Exploring what the Bible says can be a challenge by yourself but coming together with others is a great way to hear it being explained, a chance to ask questions and to learn.  The Ladies Bible study ticks all those boxes and meets on a Monday, every fortnight at 10am here at the church.  They are currently studying Ephesians 2:11-22, looking at the oneness in Christ so come along and bring your questions!

“We all dream of a better world…”

Each of us is looking for something more every hour of every day but finding our place in the world seems more and more complex.  Over the next 7 weeks, here at Smithton, we are going to be looking at, “finding your place in the the Bible’s big story”.

We will be using a resource called, ‘The world we all want‘, which leads us through God’s amazing promises and some of his extraordinary plans.

Our first session is this Sunday (10th January) starting at 9am with breakfast to get everything started.  If you would like more information about the course then contact Ali, our family worker here.

Happy New Year!

We want to wish everyone a Happy New Year!  2016 will probably flyby just as quickly as 2015 and we hope that you can come and visit us.  You can plan a visit by following the button below or if you want to speak to us click the ‘contact us’ button.  It really is that easy!

Planning a visit and contacting us is great but how can we connect with you in 2016?  Well there are numerous groups on during the week – catering for tiny tots to the more seasoned veterans amongst us!  Connect here and see all that is happening at Smithton Church.

Our blog on Wednesday discussed New Year’s Resolutions and what questions we should ask as we look to change.  Well how about starting 2016 of by reading the following article?

5 Reasons to Read the Entire Bible in 2016‘ encourages us to see the big picture of the Bible, allows us to connect the dots between Old and New Testaments and to see Jesus throughout!

New Year’s Resolutions

“None of these reasons for change really works because they put “me” at the center of my change project, and that’s pretty much what sin is.”

You don’t need a doctorate in psychology to know that round about this time of year gym memberships will have sky rocketed.  A New Year brings about a chance to start afresh at losing a bit of weight, cut back on the chocolates or both!

Tim Chester (author of over 20 books including ‘A meal with Jesus‘) has compiled 10 thought provoking questions to ask ourselves as we look towards 2016 and any changes that we wish to make. Is our desire to change, “to prove to ourselves to God, other people or ourselves”?  Follow the link here to read the article.

What’s on this week?

Don’t put your dancing shoes away yet!  The Youth Fellowship are holding a Festive Ceilidh Celebration for S1-S6 on Tuesday at 7:30pm.  With the best ceilidh band reunited, come down to Smithton Church and be prepared to dance all night!

We will not be having a prayer meeting this Wednesday but come along to our service on Thursday.

On Thursday at 11:15pm we will be hosting a New Years Eve Service here at Smithton Church.  Alistair Wilson will lead our time together and the service will finish shortly after 12:00pm.  This is an open door event to everyone in the community so please do come along with your friends and family!

Sunday at Smithton

Are you among the 7 out of 10 Scots that are motivated to go to an event to meet people from your community? This Sunday at Smithton is your chance to come along and meet your community and also hear about the Good News of the Bible! 11am and 6pm are our starting times.

This Sunday we have Chris Davidson – a student at the Edinburgh Theological Seminary – with us for the morning and evening worship services.  In the morning we will be looking together at 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17 with the sermon entitled ‘Standing Firm’ and the evening sermon is called ‘Simple but Hard’ from Mark 10:13-23.

We have two baptisms in a row and this week is number two.  Eve Eglington will be baptised near the end of our morning service and Rev Aonghas Iain Macdonald will be leading this section of the service.

We also have a Holiday Sunday School in the morning for those in pre-school and Primary 1 with singing, games and Bible teaching.

What a chance to meet others and connect with those in the community!

What’s on this week?

Christmas is on Friday (as I’m sure you’re all aware) and we still have a few events left!

Tuesday – Smithton end of term assembly

Singing, readings by local children, a short talk and festive goodies – it’s the Smithton Primary end of term assembly!  We are fortunate enough to host the end of term assembly here at the church on Tuesday at 09:30.  Come along, meet our community, eat the goodies and hear about the reason for the season!

Wednesday – Prayer Meeting

Nothing stops our prayer meeting – not even when the speakers car breaks down!  This Wednesday we have one of our elders, Donnie Maclean, speaking to us.  This is an amazing way to meet more people in the church, hear about what is going on locally and further afield and above all else, to pray together to our Lord who loves to hear us!

Thursday – Free North Carol Service

“Mince pies afterwards”.  If that isn’t a group puller I don’t know what is.  The Free North Church is inviting everyone to their Carol Service this Thursday at 18:30 – so let’s hope they have enough mince pies!

Community Carol Service

Tonight is the night!  Our annual Community Carol service is at 19:00!

Normally if you’re any later than 18:45 you’re left standing for the service but not this year.  Tonight once we’ve filled our 450 seater we have space for more!  Our Cafe Lounge will have a live link into the service so the whole family can sit together and be first for the festive treats.

Parking can sometimes bring about a headache for those in charge but this year headache number 2 has been solved.  If you’re close to the church you could walk along but if you are driving than we have an overspill car park.  The Catholic Church across the road has been really accommodating and are allowing us to use their car park so if in doubt, use it.

This year we have the privilege of having our locals schools joining us who will be leading us in some carols. Duncan Forbes, Balloch, Smithon and Cradehall Primary Schools will all be here singing their hearts out!  What a chance to join together as a community.

With shortbread (that has just been dropped off and looks better than, dare I say it, Walkers), local schools singing carols and a Christmas message from a man in KFC – it is a great way to put you in the mood for Christmas!

Four Kinds of Christmas

The countdown continues until Christmas!  Check out this video for looking at ‘Four Kinds of Christmas’.  Everyone sees Christmas differently so check out the below video to see which person you are.

Community Carol Service – Smithton Church

Next Wednesday, at 7pm we are having our Carol Service. With local primary schools, festive treats and a christmas message – be sure not to miss out on hearing about the best gift of Christmas!

If you are not from the Smithton/Culloden area, you’re more than welcome to come along but why not support your local carol service?  It is always a great chance for the community to join together.

What’s Going On This Week?

Sunday Review

We had a great weekend at Smithton, with Angus Macrae (Dingwall Free Church) teaching us from Matthew 1, looking at the genealogy of Christ, and Acts 20, where Paul says his final farewell to the church in Ephesus. If you didn’t make it to the services check out the sermons here.

What’s Your Idea Of A Perfect World?

Our Family Worker, Ali shared with us an exciting new course that will be running in the New Year called “The World We All Want.” This course is for anyone who is interested in taking a deeper look at different world views and comparing with the world view that the Bible offers us. Have a look at this video to find out more, and if you’d like to sign up for it, get in touch with the church office and we can put your name down.

Things To Note This Week

This Wednesday we’ve got our Community Groups, and we’ll be looking at Psalm 53. If you’d like information about joining a Community Group, please get in touch with our church office.

The local primary schools will be coming along to the church throughout this week to our Christmas Celebration. This is a fantastic event that takes the children through the Christmas story as told through the Bible.

For more information about any of the meetings and events happening this week, check out the rest of the website or contact the church office.
