Sunday at Smithton

This Sunday we’ve saved a seat for you!

Smithton Church is a place where God meets normal people.  Anyone is welcome, no matter what’s going on in your life.  The services are at 11am and in the evening at 6pm.  This week we have a young student, Ali Sewell with us as our preacher.  Ali currently works at Christ Church, Edinburgh while studying at Edinburgh Theological Seminary as a candidate for the Free Church.

After the Christmas and New Year break the church activities are back as normal this coming week.  For a full rundown of activities come and visit our Connect page here.

Our first session of ‘The world we all want’ is this Sunday (10th January) starting at 9am with breakfast to get everything started.

Each of us is looking for something more every hour of every day but finding our place in the world seems more and more complex.  Over the next 7 weeks, here at Smithton, we are going to be looking at, “finding your place in the the Bible’s big story”.

If you would like more information about the course then contact Ali, our family worker here.

On Wednesday evening, we are back in our Community Groups.  There are 8 dotted around town and if you would like to join one for the first time please phone the office (01463 793191) and we will link you into a group. These small groups meet in various homes and are a great way of meeting other Christians as we discuss a passage in the bible.

Most of us are aware that the new Star Wars movie, ‘The Force Awakens‘ has hit our cinemas this week. From all accounts it is going to be a sell out and a great success. The new film will evoke memories of the earlier episodes. Well, this Sunday we have the return of our old pastor David Meredith. It may not be as far back as the last Star Wars episode but all the same we are looking forward to having him back in our pulpit.

In fact this Sunday is also a bit special as it’s our family service so there is even more reason to come along. Our morning service starts at 11am and our evening service is at 6pm. David will be preaching at both. The baptism of Matthew Herbst (grandson of Alistair and Jenny Wilson) will also take place during the morning service.

You are all very much welcome.

It’s getting close to Christmas and so this Sunday our services will be have a festive season theme to it. In the morning Alistair Wilson will be our preacher and he will be looking at a couple of bible passages from Matthew’s gospel, his sermon title being ‘Let earth receive her king!’.  In the evening Joe Barnard from Kiltarlity will be back preaching; his sermon title is ‘The hope- driven life’.

In our services we aim to bring glory to God by living for Jesus Christ and making Him known.  We seek to explain the Bible clearly so that people can understand it and respond to its message.  Our numbers meeting on a Sunday vary but are around 300-400 in the morning and a little less in the evening.

We’d love you to join us after the services in our cafe/lounge for a coffee so that we can get to know you a bit better.  We look forward to seeing you!

We have two church services on a Sunday. One at 11am and an evening service at 6pm. As our pastor has moved on (after 31 years with us) we are inviting different ministers along for the next few months. On Sunday we welcome Rev Angus MacRae who is the Free Church minister in Dingwall. The sermon in the morning is entitled ‘A new king and five shady ladies’. An interesting and intriguing title. Come along and find out what this is all about. At the evening service our final singing is a relatively new one to those that attend. It’s a Keith Getty composition entitled ‘Oh how good it is when the family of God…’ Here is the link to have a wee practice before Sunday.

Our services are informal and you don’t need to dress up. We have a welcome team who will greet you when you arrive and can answer your questions. As a church we have a wide age range of people worshipping with us – from young tots (where they can go to our crèche) to teenagers and then right through to our senior citizens so please know that you will not feel out of place! We also have a Sunday Club which caters for Pre School – Primary 7. After the service we have refreshments in our cafe/lounge so please feel free to stay behind so that we can get to know you a bit better.

Please also note that we have a large car park so you should not have any difficulty parking.

Our preacher on Sunday is our own John Nicholls who will be speaking at both the morning and evening services.

In the morning John will preach from Proverbs 17, the title of his sermon being ‘The sound of silence’. In the evening at 6pm, John will be back, preaching this time from 1 Peter 1: 6-9.

We are pleased to hear that John Nicholls has been appointed Moderator Designate for the 2016 General Assembly.  Please give thanks for this and pray for him as he prepares to take on this very important role in our denomination.

This Sunday David is preaching at both the morning and evening services. In the morning his sermon is from Mark 9:7 on the subject ‘This is my son….listen to him’ At our six o’clock service David will be returning to his mini series….Finishing well. The sermon title this week is ‘Finishing well…passing it on’ from Acts 8:26-40.

After the morning service we have our Christianity Explored group; session 3 this week. It has been a great group of folk who have been coming along, approximately a dozen folk around two tables wishing to know more about the Christian faith. There have been loads of questions and lots of interaction with each other. If you want to come along but not signed up, don’t worry just pop in. It starts at 1pm with a light lunch in the cafe/lounge.

“One life. What’s it all about?”

Starting on Sunday 30th August, we are going to be running a ‘Christianity Explored’ Course for seven weeks, at 13:30 until 15:00 in the cafe/lounge at church.  We have 17 people already signed up for the course and we are look forward to getting started with everyone.  It kicks off with a light lunch and then we move into the meeting with a short video.

The course answers big questions in an informal meeting.  There will be time to ask questions with a leader in a safe environment, where the only stupid question is the one which is not asked.

It will take us through one of the books in the bible, Mark.  You can start reading it now here or find it in a Bible, in the New Testament.

For more information you can go to the ‘Christianity Explored’ website or contact us at the church office.
